Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge

The bridge is located in the area where the Iyo Suigun (navy) used to base themselves. The scenery is beautiful and the view of the Kurushima Kaikyo and the whirlpools can be seen from the bridge.

It is one of Japan’s three most rapid currents, and at its highest, maelstroms can be seen in various places.
The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge spans the 4-km-wide strait.

It is the world’s first triple suspension bridge consisting of three long span bridges with a total length of 4,105 meters.
The Nishi-Seto Expressway (Shimanami Kaido) is in the center, with a bicycle and pedestrian path on the north side and a bike path on the south side. Pedestrians can pass through free of charge.

The road was built to take advantage of the natural scenery of the Kurushima Straits, which was described in the poem, “Just like a picture.
It connects Oshima Island and Shikoku across the Kurushima Straits in the Seto Inland Sea, and is the largest of its kind on the Shimanami Kaido.
